Recreational Streaming

let’s be real: the sheer commitment required to binge watch netflix for eight straight hours should qualify it as an olympic sport.

But until the IOC decides otherwise, you can find us curled up on our couch after WFH hours with some of our favorite Recreational films. After all, streaming might not be physically stimulating but it technically counts as an exercise of the brain. Right?

From ’90s cult classics to the ‘What’s Trending’ section on Netflix, these five titles are sure to keep you in good company while you’re social distancing this season.

1. Borg vs. McEnroe (2017)

Nothing gets us amped up like a generous heaping of Shia LaBeouf at his best. This fictional biography recounts the intense sports rivalry between tennis legends Björn Borg and John McEnroe as they go head to head at the 1980 Wimbledon Championships, fusing moody cinematography into the otherwise untold tale of what happens when there’s only one person standing between you and your biggest dream.

2. Q Ball (2019)

This documentarian production, spearheaded by basketball all-timer Kevin Durant, follows the San Quentin Warriors, a competitive basketball team of prison inmates from the notorious San Quentin State Prison in California. Watch as the Warriors take on teams from the outside, climbing their way up the ladder and even playing against members of the Golden State Warriors’ coaching staff. If there’s one thing to take away from this film, it’s that the heart of sport lies firmly in camaraderie, not performance.

3. I, Tonya (2017)

See below for the exact face we’re making if we hear ‘please enter your meeting ID followed by the pound key’ one more time. Margot Robbie executes an impeccable Tonya Harding as this star-studded, Oscar-winning drama sorts out the unfortunate controversy surrounding Nancy Kerrigan, fellow Olympic hopeful and Harding’s largest competitor, and the mysterious attack that ended her figure skating career. It’s one of those nail biters that has you holding your breath through half the film — even though you already know what happened in real life.

4. Cheer (2020)

Technically a series, but we binged it all in one sitting so we’re including it. Competitive cheer finally gets its turn in the spotlight, as Navarro College’s then 13 championship title holding cheer team fights for their fourteenth win at the 2019 Daytona Championship. Between team sweetheart Jerry Harris’ Ellen-approved mat talk, Gen Z cheerlebrity Gabi Butler’s mid-season entrance to the team (post-press tour), and LaDarius Marshall’s coming-of-age story, there’s enough drama to keep you well entertained for hours.

5. Space Jam (1994)

Does this film even need a description? For the few of us that haven’t checked this one off the classics list yet: Michael Jordan. Bugs Bunny. What happens when hotshot NBA players and iconic childhood characters join forces? Magic. If you’re itching to indulge in this cult classic, you’re not a moment too soon. Space Jam 2 is slated to release in 2021.
