Doing Things At Home

one plus side to working from home? you get to choose your own office scenery.

As Team OV heads into week four of working from home, we’re readjusting our typical work day routines to better suit the confines of our living room couch and shared kitchen spaces. While some are make-shifting their own standing desks, others are tuning into virtual workouts and doubling dosing on the self-care. 

We’ve taken the liberty of breaking down the essential parts of every work day to help you shake things up when your routine is feeling a bit too…routine.

Morning

7:00 a.m. Wake up.

Morning is essential for the tone of the day. To begin, I’ll count breaths to 10 for a few minutes, followed by some meditation. I’ve created this visualization where I picture myself in the West Texas desert — a place of calm that’s super beautiful to me. I pretend the wind’s blowing and kicking up dust and making it cloudy. That’s kind of like the typical state of your mind. Then I sit there and wait until that disappears, imagining that the desert turns completely silent and still, which is an analogy for my true state of mind. 

8:00 a.m. I take a 30-minute walk through the neighborhood I live in. There’s lots of trees, don’t see very many people, and no tech. I leave my phone at home and walk, and think, and try to chill out. Sometimes I’ll stand in a park for a couple minutes and usually I can see the sun peaking through the trees in such a nice way. 

8:30 a.m. For breakfast, I’m a smoothie kind of guy. Hemp milk, half a frozen banana, handful of blueberries, a little bit of peanut butter, and pumpkin pie spice to shake on top. Cinnamon works just as well.

9:00 a.m. Usually I’ll try and get a couple stretches in and a light 15-20 minute workout with pull ups or push ups, or a little bit of a dance. If I’m dancing, I’ll turn on Grind by Les Sins. It’s a good morning dance song. 

9:30 a.m. Clock in and start work.

Lunch

12:30 p.m. Around lunch time, I’ve been laying out in the sun as much as possible. Any time I see that the sun’s out, I’ll just go outside and take a break and read. Getting some sunshine is key during this time — the Vitamin D is good for your immune system. Right now I’m reading “Educated” by Tara Westover. It’s a memoir about her childhood. She grew up in a home where she didn’t go to school because of religious reasons, so the book is about her transition into college and being on her own for the first time. 

Afternoon

3:00 p.m. Since we’ve been working from home, my four roommates and I have been doing @thefitnessmarshall routines. Legit, we’ve coordinated our schedules to figure out which blocks we all have free so we can clear the entire living room and blast it on the TV. Good As Hell by Lizzo and Intentions by Justin Bieber are our top two. We’ve been trying to do them repetitively so that we know the motions. And we’ve also been sending our videos to friends and challenging them. My mom is in her late 50s, but it’s a five minute video that’s totally doable. High volume, good vibes, and we’re just laughing our asses off.

Evening

5:30 p.m. After work, I’m either reading or binge watching a Netflix show. Right now the latter is Tiger King, plus a glass of wine. Before that it was Little Fire Everywhere on Hulu, starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. I’ve also been trying to pick up reading again since I haven’t really had the energy to do that in the past. I just restarted “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell, which touches on word of mouth marketing and how businesses have been affected by past epidemics, like when the flu hit for the first time ever. It’s an easy read, but feels really relevant at the moment. I also ordered “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens, which has been a book club favorite for Team OV. 

And the most important part — usually, I’ll also throw on an Aztec Secret face mask or the Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial while I’m winding down.

I’ve also been trying to pick up reading again since I haven’t really had the energy to do that in the past.

Night

10:00 p.m. I’m a huge fan of some coconut oil from Trader Joe’s as a natural alternative to makeup remover. Then I’ll wash my face with the Herbalism face cleanser from Lush. I also swear by Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream, there’s something about it that just makes my skin glow the next day. Sometimes if I feel like my face might be freaking out or something’s not right, I’ll sleep in Origin’s Active Charcoal Mask. I’ll finish my skincare routine off with Perricone MD’s Cold Plasma Plus+ Neck and Chest, because you can’t forget to take care of the most sensitive parts of your skin.
